We wanted to try some hiking in Iowa but that proved a challenge – at least in the areas we visited. We did manage to find a nice little gem Dolliver State Park.
The park is located about 20 minutes south of Fort Dodge along the Des Moines River. It has about 5 miles of trails so it’s not a huge park, but it provided us with some nice trails and some interesting views.
We hiked around the trails for about a 2 hours, then headed back towards civilization. We cleaned up and had supper then headed to HyVee at Webster City to get some groceries.
As we drove into Webster City, we ran into a detour with roads closed. We followed the detours and parked in the grocery store lot and then found out why. There was a parade. A big parade. In the middle of the week. In the evening. What a great surprise.
Turns out it was the Hamilton County Fair parade that opens the celebration each year. It was your classic small town parade: lots of children, tractors, business trucks, the local insurance agent handing out pens. Something for everyone. The kids got all the candy except there were a couple of times a candy bar landed right in our laps. What could we do? We enjoyed them.
The horses came by and the parade was over. We made our grocery stop and headed back. It was a good day in Iowa.
