Sturgeon Bay and Shiwauga Wisconsin

Posted on September 11, 2023September 11, 2023 by David Harris

Tour of Eastern Wisconsin Day 6

Since we’ve been visiting Door County, I have wanted to bicycle Bay Shore Drive. The road extends from Egg Harbor south to Sturgeon Bay along Green Bay. Today was the day. We set the ride to be an 18 mile one-way trip and planned to meet our wives for breakfast.

The road was good and the traffic light so the ride went very smooth. It actually seemed like it was all downhill-and with the wind. And very scenic. That’s always the best ride.

food We all met for breakfast at Morning Glory by the Bay in Sturgeon Bay. It’s kind of a small restaurant so there’s always a bit of a wait. But it’s definitely worth it. We sat outside and enjoyed a tasty meal and planned our paddle on the bay.

We chose Otumba Park on the west side of the Sturgeon Bay canal. There was a nice beach and parking close by. We paddled of the north shore of the bay for about 2 miles then returned. It got a little choppy but nothing too exciting.

The bay is host to a music show in August, Concert on the Water. Our friends have attended numerous times and really enjoyed it. We’ll put that on our bucket list for the next visit.

After loading up the boats, we stopped at 5th & Jefferson Coffee House. Once again, we love re-purposed-old-house shops. They have seating indoors but we chose the huge outdoor area with plenty of shade, tables, and room to relax. We sat and enjoyed the ambience until it was time to head home.

We even got some lid stickers for the van dash (the monkeys).

We retuned home packed up and headed out Ellison Bay to stay with friends. We seem to be blessed with great friends in Wisconsin. We had wine and cheese before we headed out for the evening. Yummy!

food The evenings schedule included a show so we decided to just get some ice cream beforehand. Door County Ice Cream Factor in Sister Bay, WI has some of the best ice cream anywhere, according to sources. I’m not big on ice cream but the Flavor of the Day Pistachio was good. Mary had the Cookies and Cream and loved it.

Plus they had this cool truck sitting out front

Northern Sky Theatre is located in Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek, WI. We’ve visited the park before but it was in the daylight and on bicycles. The Amphitheatre sets right in the trees for a rustic, yet very comfortable setting and close-by parking. They even provided seat cushions for the bench seating. The weather was sketchy for the evening but the rain held off making a humid but pleasant night.

The theatre group features original stories and music scores and The Fish Whisper was just one of those shows. Normally, Paddle Pedal and Coffee doesn’t do reviews of musicals. But then this is the first time we’ve ever attended such a performance while on a ‘Tour’ so I guess from now on we will.

“Brimming with hope and romance, The Fish Whisperer is a world premiere musical that will hook you with sweet melodies and laughs!”

Seems the town of Shiwaugo Wisconsin’s fishing tourism has dried up and a mystery person appears that can solve their ‘fish-ain’t-biting’ problem–for a fee. Hijinks, tears, and laughter ensue. The story reminded me of cross between the “The Rainmaker” and “The Music Man” except everyone had a distinct Wisconsin accent. It was a small cast with few set changes along with good acting and singing. It was a fun show. We’ll be adding this to our Door County return list as well. FYI: Their current stage show is titled “Guys and Does-A whimsical excursion into the world of Wisconsin deer hunting“.
