I was invited in early June to go on a two day fishing excursion on Lake Michigan by a friend and his buddies.
Aboard the Breezy 1.
I’d been fishing on Lake Michigan before but had very limited luck. This time, our captain knew exactly where and how deep the coho were running.
We left the dock at 11:30 AM Saturday and got our limit by 2:30. Even in the rain.
The next morning we arrived at the dock at 5:00 AM. It turned into a beautiful day and by 10:00, we had our limit once again.
By the way, there are no coffee shops open on Sunday at 5:00 AM so Casey’s had to do. Turns out, their new grind-and-brew tastes pretty good. And it was only $ 2.00 for a large cup. Who knew?
Each of us ended up with about 18 lbs of filleted salmon. When I got the catch home, we tried a recipe that included sriracha, Kewpie mayonnaise, brown sugar and green onions. All cooked on cedar boards. It tasted great. On our second try with this recipe, we soaked the boards in water longer, used fewer burners (just the outside ones) and put the boards in the middle. That worked better.
